Well, the Olympics are over. Malaysia medal tally: Gold 0, Silver 0, Bronze 0. Of course I didn't expect them to win gold in swimming (dominated by the usual suspects) but I thought we would at least get a medal in Badminton (a sport Malaysia is always ranked in the top 5).
What happened? If you read the papers you get lots of excuses.
1. The draught in the arena
2. The unruly wind in Athens
3. Too many sports associations with overlapping responsibilites
4. Not enough money
5. Athletes not mentally tough
So what is it? Throw out number 1 and 2 because all of the other athletes had to deal with the same problems. Honestly, I don't have an answer but I will say that a lot of our athletes are trained overseas by some of the best coaches (US and Europe). Regarding funding, a quick look at the medal standings will reveal that a lot of countries that are taking home medals probably have less funds than Malaysia. A view that our Prime Minister agrees with.
That leaves us with #3 and #5. I'll leave it to the Sports Ministry to figure it out from here. But one thing is for sure. We have a long way to go.
I really enjoy being at this informal place. Wish you luck and success for the future. Surely see you again sometime.
