Haaretz measures the potential impact on Israel-US relations. Meanwhile, Israeli officials flatly deny and blame the story on election year politics. I don't understand how this claim holds water. Both Kerry and Bush have explicitly shown unwavering support for Israel. Who's playing politics? Nader? I wish.
Meanwhile, check out the comments at rogerlsimon. Some good. Some ridiculous. My favorite is a post that says this story is not to be believed because of the following: A) There is no Iran policy (I'm sure the poster would like to clarify how he knows this) B) You don't need classified documents to know about the Iran debate, it's public. (There's debate but no policy yet and apparently the state dept. debates out in the hallways at the water cooler) C)These are unnamed FBI sources, makes a comparison to another story that these "unnamed" source contributed to an alleged false story.(If they are all unnamed, how does he know that these are the same unnamed sources? is he saying that all unnamed sources are unreliable? what about all of the other BIG stories in the last 5 years broken by unnamed sources?) Dubious indeed.
Whether it's true or not, we'll have to wait and see. But given Israel's involvement in several shady deals in the past, I won't hold my breath.
